An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale (SR) rocked a town in Chile, specifically in southern waters near the town Timuco.Tens of thousands of people who panic in droves toward higher ground, fearing an earthquake can trigger a tsunami. However, for a while, no one was hurt.
According to reports the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 20:20, Sunday, December 2, 2010 local time (Monday morning GMT), with which is centered in waters 70 kilometers from the city of Temuco. Chile's disaster response office said the quake which occurred at a depth of 16 kilometers is a medium-scale category.
USGS also reported a magnitude 5 aftershock SR. Shortly after the first quake, residents in the town of La Araucania, Puerto Saavedra, Tolten and Teodore Smith in droves toward higher ground for fear of the tsunami threat.
The quake could be felt for one minute in the city Biobo, Maule and O'Higgins. The area was in February last year was rocked by an earthquake measuring 8.8 magnitude and cause a tsunami, which killed more than 500 people.
Head of the Disaster Response Chile, Vicente Nunez, said that the earthquake that happened last Sunday was not the potential to cause tsunami.
Nunez reported no damage and death toll in the earthquake yesterday. But the quake had cut off electricity and
telephone networks.
"That's normal in a situation like this, broken telephone lines and
power failure. No residents were injured and damages were reported, "Nunez said as
quoted by the Associated Press.
President of Chile, Sebastian Pinera, encourage citizens to remain calm in the face of the disaster. He said that residents had acted as it has been taught, namely to save themselves.
"We've done self-evacuation drills, that's what we want from the citizens. Fortunately no injuries or deaths, "Pinera says.
